FAQs

Q: Do I need prior teaching experience?
No. We're looking for empathetic "elder siblings," not traditional teachers. Your ability to connect, chat, and spark a child's curiosity matters much more than formal experience.
Q: Do I need to be from a top college?
No. We've had Bookbuddies from IITs and NITs and from colleges you've never heard of, and it has never once been the deciding factor. The real bar is that you love reading. If books are already your thing and you like talking to kids, you're exactly who we're looking for — any college, any year, recent grads included.
Q: What happens after I apply?
You pick your own interview slot on the last screen of the form, so you finish the application with a time already booked. The interview is a relaxed video chat with our team — no prep, no mock lesson, no trick questions. After that comes a short training, and then we match you with your first reader.
Q: How much do I earn, and when does it reach me?
₹300 for every completed session, paid out monthly straight to your bank account. Everything is tracked automatically on the platform, so you can always see what you've earned — no invoices, no chasing anyone for it.
Q: Is there training, and do I get paid during it?
There's onboarding before your first session and it's genuinely simple — platform basics, how to ask questions that get a kid talking, and our safety rules. It isn't paid, because it's onboarding rather than work. But there's no unpaid trial after it either: your very first real session earns you ₹300, same as your hundredth.
See all 17 questions
Q: How long is one session, and how many will I have?
About an hour each — you pick how many kids you want a week when you apply, and you can take on more or scale back later whenever your semester decides to get in the way.
Q: How much time do I need to commit weekly?
2-3 hours minimum. To build a strong bond with your mentees, consistency is key. However, you are in full control of scheduling those hours.
Q: What if I have exams?
We're flexible. You manage your own schedule. Simply adjust your availability on the platform or communicate with parents in advance to reschedule during exam weeks.
Q: Can I stop if it gets too much?
Yes — there's no lock-in. The one thing we ask is that you don't disappear on a child mid-book. See your current readers through, or tell us early enough that we can hand them over properly and let them say a real goodbye. A kid who gets dropped without warning stops trusting the whole thing, and so does their parent.
Q: What language will I be reading in?
English most of the time, but sessions also run in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Marathi, Bengali, Spanish and Arabic. You pick your languages in the application, and we only match you with kids you can genuinely chat with.
Q: What do I need to run a session?
A laptop, preferably — the bigger screen makes reading together far easier, and the camera and mic are usually better. Beyond that: internet that holds up for an hour, and a corner quiet enough for a kid to hear you. A phone can work at a pinch, but it's not what we'd recommend.
Q: Is it audio or video?
Video. Face-to-face interaction is essential for building trust and reading together. All sessions are conducted via live video (and recorded for child safety).
Q: Who sees the recordings, and do parents get my phone number?
Recordings exist purely for child safety — our team reviews one only if a concern comes up, and they're never posted anywhere or handed over for browsing. Your number stays with us too: scheduling and messages run through the platform, so you're not giving out your personal contact.
Q: How are mentors matched with kids?
Through shared interests. We look at hobbies, personality traits, and reading levels to ensure a natural "elder sibling" dynamic right from the start.
Q: Do I need to buy the books or prepare materials?
No. Bookstaken provides all the reading materials, conversation prompts, and discussion guides. You just bring your enthusiasm.
Q: What if I need help during or after a session?
We have your back. Our core support team is always available to step in, offer guidance, or provide tips for handling uncooperative moments.
Q: Do I actually get a certificate, or is that just a line on the website?
A real one. You finish with a signed experience certificate from Bookstaken — proof of genuine 1:1 work with children, which reads rather better on an application than another unpaid internship.
