How to Help Your Child Write a Book, and Publish It

Seven steps from first idea to finished book, then four ways to share it.

The short answer

Let your child choose the idea, and read like a writer together: notice how authors open a chapter, show a feeling or make you turn the page. Plan the beginning, middle and end in three lines. Write one short chapter at a time, read each one aloud, and leave spelling until the end. When it's finished, add a cover, a title and a dedication, then choose how to share it: a printed keepsake, a free online publication, or a print-on-demand book.

Seven steps, from idea to finished book

For ages 6–14, at home, a chapter at a time.

  1. Step 1

    The idea is theirs

Ask, don't suggest: “Who is your story about? What do they want more than anything? What's stopping them?” A character who wants something, and something in the way, is enough to start a book. Stuck? Try our free story ideas.

  2. Step 2

    Read like a writer

When you read together, ask how the author did it. “Why does the author start here?” “How do we know what she's feeling?” “What made you turn the page?” Then let your child try the same trick in their own chapter.

  3. Step 3

    Plan it in three lines

Beginning: who, where, and what they want. Middle: what goes wrong, and what they try. End: how it turns out. Younger children can draw the three parts instead.

  4. Step 4

One short chapter at a time

A chapter can be half a page. A regular time, two or three times a week, keeps the story alive better than one long weekend push.

  5. Step 5

    Talk before they write

Most children get stuck on what to say, not how to spell it. Let them tell you the next chapter first. For younger children, write their words down as they speak.

  6. Step 6

Read it aloud, praise one thing

Ask them to read each chapter to you. Name one thing you liked (“the crow who gossips made me laugh”) and ask one question (“what's the dog thinking here?”). Save corrections for the end.

  7. Step 7

    Finish first, polish last

A finished rough book beats a perfect first chapter. When the story's done, fix spelling together, keeping their words. Then choose a title, write a dedication and an “About the author” line, and make a cover.

What a book looks like at each age

A rough guide, not a rule.

  • Ages 6–8

    A picture book

8 to 12 pages, a sentence or two and a drawing on each. They tell it, and you help write it down.

  • Ages 9–11

    A short chapter book

4 to 8 chapters of a page or two. They write it themselves, with help when they're stuck.

  • Ages 12–14

    A longer story

8 or more chapters, a plan before they start, and a second draft.

Four ways to publish your child's book

Keep them safe

Use their first name or a pen name. Leave out their school, address and photos. Keep any account in your name.

Where a mentor helps

In a Bookstaken session, a college mentor helps your child write a book of their own. They read a real book, talk it through, then write the next chapter of theirs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can a child publish a book on Amazon?
Yes, with a parent. Amazon KDP accounts are for adults, but a parent or guardian can open one and publish a book their child wrote, with the child named as the author. A paperback needs at least 24 pages.
Q: How old do you have to be to publish a book?
There's no minimum age to be an author. Publishing accounts such as Amazon KDP are for adults, so a parent sets one up. Some children's publishers, including Bookosmia in India, publish writers as young as six.
Q: Is it free to publish my child's book?
It can be. Bookosmia publishes children's work online for free, and Amazon KDP charges nothing to publish: the printing cost comes out of each copy sold. You pay only for printed copies you order, or for a paid publishing service.
Q: How long should my child's book be?
As long as the story needs. For a printed paperback on Amazon KDP, the minimum is 24 pages, so a short story may need a page per scene, with pictures.
Q: My child starts stories but never finishes them. What helps?
Plan the ending first, keep chapters short and set a regular time. Reading each chapter aloud to someone who wants to know what happens next keeps them going.
Q: Should I correct spelling while my child writes?
Not while they write: corrections mid-story stop the ideas. Read it together at the end and fix spelling then, keeping their words and their voice.
