I've always looked for an avenue like this, wherein my children can learn from enthusiastic young students who love a subject and can instill that love in the kids ❤️❤️

Finished the book, and still talking about it?

Four signs, and what changes.

“Finishes a book and wants to talk about it”

A mentor to talk it through with, the whole hour.

“Has strong opinions about the characters”

They give a verdict, and back it up.

“Reads fast but remembers little”

They retell it, start to finish.

“Already makes up stories of their own”

They build one, chapter by chapter, in their story journal.

Look elsewhere if your child wants a group of friends to read with, is still learning to read or needs exam or grammar preparation.

Book club or 1:1?

Both are good. They suit different children.

  • A book club

    • A group reading the same book
    • Everyone takes a turn to speak
    • Great for children who love a crowd
  • 1:1 with a mentor

    • A book picked for your child
    • The whole hour to think out loud
    • Their own verdict, and their own story

Want a group? A library, school or online book club is the better fit.

See a sample book conversation

Here is a made-up scene to show the kinds of questions a mentor can ask. In a session, the conversation follows your child's book and their answers.

Leela found a red umbrella on the bus. It had stopped raining, and her stop was next. She stayed in her seat, watching the door for someone to come back.

Retell: What did Leela find, and what did she do next?

Look for clues: Why might Leela have waited? Which detail in the scene makes you think that?

Give an opinion: Would you have made the same choice? Tell me why.

Imagine: What if nobody came back? How would you continue the story?

The aim is to hear their thinking and help them explain it. These are example prompts, not a test or a fixed script.

Kids say "Fine." Our reports say the rest.

After every session you get a report: what they read, what they talked about, and how they're growing.

Aarav came in bursting with questions about Mowgli leaving the jungle. He argued Bagheera was the real hero, and backed it up with two moments from the book. He's reading with his head and his heart now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this a book club?
No. A book club is a group. Bookstaken is 1:1: one child and one college mentor, for 60 minutes on Google Meet. If your child wants a group, a library, school or online book club suits them better.
Q: My child already loves reading. Is it for them?
Yes. Keen readers get a lot from talking a book through: they give their own verdict, back it up, and write stories of their own. It suits children still finding books they love, too.
Q: What books do they read?
A real book picked for your child's interests and reading level. They read their own copy, and each session talks through the part they've reached.
Q: Do they write as well?
Yes. Every session has time for their own story, built chapter by chapter in their story journal.
Q: How much do the sessions cost, and is there a free trial?

Your first 60-minute, 1:1 Bookstaken session is free, with no payment details needed to book it. Paid prices depend on your family's billing country and the session pack you choose. The Pricing page shows your currency, the full pack price and the average price per session. Paid sessions have no expiry.
